NOTE: when building enclosures for subwoofers,
add the driver displacement to the box size. You will find this in the
technical details pdf for each driver; click on the blue link in the
left-hand column. Ten
inch subwoofers are a good choice if you have 5" or 4" front speakers,
they blend in with the smaller speakers. They give tight accurate bass
without boom. Access1
subwoofers are very efficient can be driven by relatively low-powered amplifiers. Few
subwoofers in this price range can match the 25A1 and 30A1 for tight
dynamic accurate bass without boom.
Polyglass subwoofers use small sealed
enclosures. Subs in sealed enclosures require more amplifier power, and
are more tonally accurate.
K2P subwoofers have Focals signature
red multiferrite magnets and yellow 'W' cone material. This 'W' cone
material is a sandwich of multiple layers of Kevlar and aerospace foam,
bonded together under pressure and heat. They are hand-made because
machinery is not able to do these processes. The benefits are a
very lightweight cone with extreme rigidity, therefore no flutter and
overhang. K2P subs are designed for small sealed enclosures. Tonally,
they have more 'authority' and are tight and fast. If you like your bass loud and clear,
this range should be your preferred type.
Utopia subwoofers are our most
accurate, in terms of musical reproduction, being part of the audiophile series.
They are a showpiece of Focal engineering skills When it comes to subwoofers, power equals pleasure. A
powerful amplifier will have better control over the subwoofer. More
subwoofers are damaged by underpowering than are damaged by
overpowering. When an amplifier is working too hard, it clips the signal
and creates extra heat for the voice-coil.
Wherever possible, face your subwoofers forward not backward, and position them
as far to the rear of the vehicle as possible. This will reduce 'boominess'
and allow the lowest possible bass frequencies. Remember that bass notes
are long waves, and the further you can position the subwoofer from the
listener, the lower the frequency the system will generate. The bass
will gain impact as the sound waves are channeled forward along the
length of the vehicle.

this is a classic Focal subwoofer,
smooth, unobtrusive, blending with the front speakers to provide
seamless deep accurate bass. Likes power, so don't underpower it. Use
300 Watts RMS at least. Use a small sealed box facing forward from as
far back in the vehicle as possible. This is the thinking man's
subwoofer. Not for bassheads, this is for people who appreciate music
reproduced accurately. |

An 11"
subwoofer is often a better choice where sound quality takes precedence
over SPL (volume). These subwoofers play low, loud and clean, yet they
are fast enough to follow the music accurately, without the dreadful
subwoofer delay that is evident in so many systems. They play tight,
accurate and deep. This is no accident; have a look at the very
expensive magnets used in the motor assembly and the high-tech
multi-layer cone material. You get what you pay for. Yes, there are
cheaper subs which play louder. However, Focal set out to design
speakers for musical enjoyment not all-out noise level.
27KX is where SPL means Sheer Pleasure of Listening.
